Lányi Katalin Same-Sex Ballroom Dance

Same-sex ballroom dance is a realitvely new phenomenon. Besides artistic and sport aspects it has social relevance, too. In this book I analyze how female same-sex competitive ballroom dance can challenge patriarchal order. I argue that same-sex dancing is not simply an imitation of male-female dancing by two women, but it challenges the notion of patriarchal male-female relations reflected symbolically in dance. It cannot totally eliminate power differences between the partners, though. Ballroom dance is a symbolic representation of gender relations. Previous results also show how same-sex partnerships challenge the notion of gender relations. These let me expect that same-sex dancing challenges the notion of gender relations. Ballroom dance is a performance of heterosexuality and conventional gender roles. It is a symbolic representation of male-female sexual and social relationships. Same-sex dance has the potential to challenge these patriarchal relations by disconnecting gender from dance roles and creating more balanced roles. This study can meet the interest of those studing social sciences, especially gender studies, gay studies, social psychology or sociology.

Courtney Heard The Sex-Role Egalitarian Attitudes of African Americans

The gender role socialization experiences of African Americans have been extensively documented. Many of these authors have made cross-cultural comparisons regarding the sex-role egalitarian attitudes of women and men, particularly, among African Americans and Caucasians. It has been asserted that African Americans exhibit greater flexibility in gender roles and express a higher degree of sex-role egalitarian attitudes versus some other ethnic groups. However, recent research has revealed results which counter the argument that African Americans exhibit a high degree of sex-role egalitarianism attitudes. This book provides detailed information on the sex-role egalitarianism attitudes of some middle-class African Americans, and the gender role socialization and life experiences that have contributed to these beliefs. The results shared in this book support and expand existing literature on themes relevant to understanding the gender role socialization experiences of some African Americans to include installation of religious values, diversity in roles assumed by African American women, and perceived ethnic cultural differences in the gender role socialization experience.

Gender and American Social Science. The Formative Years

This collection of essays provides the first systematic and multidisciplinary analysis of the role of gender in the formation and dissemination of the American social sciences in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Other books have traced the history of academic social science without paying attention to gender, or have described women's social activism while ignoring its relation to the production of new social knowledge. In contrast, this volume draws long overdue attention to the ways in which changing gender relations shaped the development and organization of the new social knowledge. And it challenges the privileged position that academic--and mostly male--social science has been granted in traditional histories by showing how women produced and popularized new forms of social knowledge in such places as settlement houses and the Russell Sage Foundation. The book's varied perspectives, building on recent work in history and feminist theory, break from the traditional view of the social sciences as objective bodies of expert knowledge. Contributors examine new forms of social knowledge, rather, as discourses about gender relations and as methods of cultural critique. The book will create a new framework for understanding the development of both social science and the history of gender relations in the United States. The contributors are: Guy Alchon, Nancy Berlage, Desley Deacon, Mary Dietz, James Farr, Nancy Folbre, Kathryn Kish Sklar, Dorothy Ross...

Elder George Dear Brothers and Sisters. Gender Its Responsibility

Elder George explains the universal principle of gender and describes how the imbalance of gender-specifically the suppression of the masculine influence-in Western society has adversely affected the lives of every man, woman, and child. He shows that our burgeoning prison population, increased membership in street gangs, and decline in standards of all sorts are gender related. He explains that family is a necessary institution for the proper nurturing and protection of the human race, and that gender differences supplement each other in the collective effort of propagating and preserving the species as it grows spiritually. The book is for the concerned men and women who realize that as brothers and sisters working together they can establish a gender-based spiritually-oriented society that will ensure relative stability and security while fostering future development. Elder George is chief of Men's Action to Rebuild Society, a spiritually based and gender oriented organization that promotes a more natural way of life for humankind. He is also the author of A Gender Handbook for Western Man. He can be contacted at www.mensaction.net.

Vasiliki Karra Ideology and Gender

Looking into the issue of gender in literary works, women are sometimes depicted as traditional stereotypes; nurturing, passive and submissive. The idea of women who may be violent was for long seen as inadequate due to the difficulty which society as a whole as well as academic discipline had in seeing violence or aggression, even anger, as part of the female character. There exist two sexes as well as two genders and between them there is a set of rather obvious correspondences. The assertion that gender is not determined by sex has simply reinforced a division between the biological and the social approach in a way which leaves our understanding of biological sex fairly intact.

Elder George A Gender Handbook for Western Man

Elder George states that Western thought suffers from a gender imbalance - specifically from a lack of masculine influence - and does not understand the purpose of human existence, which he maintains is the propagation and preservation of humankind while on its spiritual journey. Consequently, Western thought has pursued a grossly materialistic lifestyle, leading to the destruction of the family and implosion of society. He attributes the issues facing society - high prison population high divorce and adultery rates, the growing dependency on medication, and the increasing incidence of mental illness - on Western thoughts ignorance of gender and the patriarchal structure necessary for the well-being of humankind. He believes many people - especially those with a marriage, family, and spiritual orientation,- realize the limitations of the materialistic society that engulfs them. They seek direction. A Gender Handbook for Western Man offers them hope by describing in logical, non-technical, and readily understandable terms the natural patriarchal way of life that supports family. It also contains examples of patriarchy in action, or the lack of it, in 39 essays taken from newspaper columns and blogs written by Elder George.

Renee Keul Dishwashing Divas: Gender & Sex Ideals in Saturday Evening Post

Scholars studying the effect of World War II on gender roles tend to divide themselves between two interpretations of the postwar era. One group, championed by scholars such as Elaine Tyler May, see the 1950s as a time of homogeneity and a return to traditional gender roles. The other group, championed by Joanne Meyerowitz, sees the postwar era as a time of transformation, in which women gained more freedom and agency. Both groups, however, look at non-domestic employment as the signifier of feminine agency. This work seeks to formulate a more expansive interpretation of WWII’s effect on female experience by examining sexual ideals in addition to gender ideals. By comparing prewar and postwar articles from the Saturday Evening Post, similarities and differences between the decades reveal a far more complex story. With society craving security and sex, the intertwined notions of marriage, sex, and domesticity created a demand for female domesticity unmatched in the 20th century.

Stella Sandford Plato and Sex

What does the study of Plato’s dialogues tell us about the modern meaning of ‘sex’? How can recent developments in the philosophy of sex and gender help us read these ancient texts anew? Plato and Sex addresses these questions for the first time. Each chapter demonstrates how the modern reception of Plato’s works Ð in both mainstream and feminist philosophy and psychoanalytical theory Ð has presupposed a ‘natural-biological’ conception of what sex might mean. Through a critical comparison between our current understanding of sex and Plato’s notion of genos, Plato and Sex puts this presupposition into question. With its groundbreaking interpretations of the Republic, the Symposium and the Timaeus, this book opens up a new approach to sex as a philosophical concept. Including critical readings of the theories of sex and sexuation in Freud and Lacan, and relating such theories to Plato’s writings, Plato and Sex both questions our assumptions about sex and explains how those assumptions have coloured our understanding of Plato. What results is not only an original reading of some of the most prominent aspects of Plato’s philosophy, but a new attempt to think through the meaning of sex today.

This work explores identity formation among refugees from the ethnic group of Karen from Burma, in camps along the Thai-Burmese border, with a specific focus on youth and women. Using a combined theoretical framework of nationalism, power, structure, agency and gender, this work aims at pointing to complex relations between a militarized and masculine understanding of power; forceful social transformations related to life in refugee camps; and changing gender relations in a refugee situation; at the intersection of which we find the subjectivity formation of Karen refugees. The role of powerful organizations in the area is discussed, as well as aspects of marginalization, powerlessness and hopelessness on the one hand, and agency, hope and meaning-making on the other. The overall argument is that Karen representations of themselves, their homeland and their own situation and prospects seem to be characterized by ambiguity.

Carl Schottmiller If These Stalls Could Talk

Through depictions of genitalia and solicitations for a “good time,” Latrinalia (restroom graffiti) entice, provoke, and disgust bathroom occupants. Despite the prevalence of latrinalia routinely encountered during daily life, restroom graffiti lacks sufficient scholarly analysis. The history of latrinalia scholarship spans disciplines and generations: from Alfred Kinsey to Alan Dundes, previous scholars analyze restroom writing as revealing inherent masculine and feminine characteristics indicative of a binary sex/gender system. By engaging contemporary theories of gender, this work analyzes latrinalia as potentially deconstructing essentialized gendered identities and reformulating context-specific conceptions of a “gender deviant” subject. By analyzing the types of latrinalia produced in their specific contexts, this work demonstrates how subjects may uphold hegemonic notions of gender or deconstruct these notions by asserting new, potentially resistant queer subjectivities.

Rachel C. Lee The Americas of Asian American Literature. Gendered Fictions Nation and Transnation

Drawing on a wide array of literary, historical, and theoretical sources, Rachel Lee addresses current debates on the relationship among Asian American ethnic identity, national belonging, globalization, and gender. Lee argues that scholars have traditionally placed undue emphasis on ethnic-based political commitments--whether these are construed as national or global--in their readings of Asian American texts. This has constrained the intelligibility of stories that are focused less on ethnicity than on kinship, family dynamics, eroticism, and gender roles. In response, Lee makes a case for a reconceptualized Asian American criticism that centrally features gender and sexuality. Through a critical analysis of select literary texts--novels by Carlos Bulosan, Gish Jen, Jessica Hagedorn, and Karen Yamashita--Lee probes the specific ways in which some Asian American authors have steered around ethnic themes with alternative tales circulating around gender and sexual identity. Lee makes it clear that what has been missing from current debates has been an analysis of the complex ways in which gender mediates questions of both national belonging and international migration. From anti-miscegenation legislation in the early twentieth century to poststructuralist theories of language to Third World feminist theory to critical studies of global cultural and economic flows, The Americas of Asian American Literature takes up pressing cultural and literary questions and points to a new di...
